I’m Janitha Missaka from the University of Moratuwa Faculty of Information Technology. Hope my experience will inspire to be a mentee in the future ScholarX program.

My mentor

Ishan Karunanayake
Ishan Karunanayake

Mr Ishan Karunanayake currently a PhD researcher at the School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales. He obtained his Bachelor’s (Hons) degree in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Moratuwa and worked as a Software Engineer for more than 2 years.

Initial experience

After I got the confirmation mail from the Sustainable Education Foundation, I got my first mail on the 8th of May from Mr Ishan. We had a few email chats and he arranged the first meeting and requested me to answer few questions. I think that questions were to figure out what I expect from this program. In the first few emails, I realized that he had a good plan to guide me in this program.

On the 15th of May, we started our first meeting at 4.30 PM. It was a group call with Mr Ishan and other group members. There, we had a friendly discussion with our mentor and we exchanged our life stories and Australian undergraduate life.

After one hour of meeting, we had individual meetings with our mentor. We discussed my short-term and long-term goals. He explained how to achieve my goals and how he can support that. We planed a couple of meetings within this month and concluded our meeting.

As we planed in the last meeting, I got a chance to face an interview with the Director, Head of Engineering of Fcode Labs , Mr Ramesh Pramuditha Rathnayake. After the interview, we talk about technology stacks that follow Fcode Labs, what they expect from an intern, how to select a tech stack for future development, architectural design patterns, front-end libraries like ReactJs and redux combination and much more. That was very helpful to be ready for the industry expectations.

Ramesh Rathnayake

BSc. (Hons) Eng. (Moratuwa)

Ramesh previously worked at Zone 24/7, serving Fortune 500 companies Limited Brands and Kohl’s Corporation by providing solution architecture in machine learning for tracking and understanding user behaviour. As an undergraduate, he also created and ran an online business producing and selling robotic sensor panels.
As Head of Engineering at Fcode Labs, Ramesh takes responsibility for the overall technical vision of each solution, ensuring they are scalable, maintainable and future-ready as well as quality assurance. He heads the Department of Engineering at Fcode Labs and supervises and guides their team of highly skilled engineers.

From the initial connection with my mentor, I figure out, the connections and network, how beneficial for undergraduate life. The ScholarX will be one of the best mentoring programs for Srilankan undergraduates and Thank you very much Sustainable Education Foundation to organize this amazing program.

Cheers !!
